DDG (Dried Distillers Grains) is a product obtained in the process of producing ethanol from corn. During this process, the starch is fermented to generate ethanol, while the remaining nutrients, such as proteins, fibers, and fats, remain in the grains, making DDG a nutritionally valuable alternative for animal feed.

The process begins with the grinding of corn, followed by the fermentation of sugars. After the distillation of ethanol, the resulting grains can be used wet (WDGS) or dry (DDG and DDGS). DDGS, in turn, has liquid solubles added before drying, increasing its nutritional value.

DDG stands out for its high protein and energy content, as well as the presence of fibers, which aid digestion. Its composition allows it to partially replace ingredients such as soybean meal and corn, and it is widely used in the nutrition of ruminants, poultry, and swine.

In ruminants, it contributes to ruminal health and improves productive performance. In poultry and swine, its balanced inclusion in diets helps to provide protein and energy efficiently.

Variations

DDG: Dry grains, easy to store and transport, suitable for various diets.

DDGS: Dry grains with added solubles, offering higher nutritional content.

WDGS: Wet grains, used fresh when logistics allow.

What are the advantages?

Protein source: Alternative to soybean meal.

High energy content: Contributes to weight gain and milk production.

Reduced acidosis: Promotes ruminal health.

Cost-effective: Viable strategy for optimizing animal nutrition.

What precautions should be taken?

DDG may vary in composition and sulfur concentration. Monitoring its inclusion in the diet and adjusting the formulation are essential practices to ensure safety and efficiency.

Animal nutrition is fundamental to success in livestock farming, and corn DDG is a sustainable and economical alternative for various types of production.
